Common Dental Emergencies & What to Do

Knocked-Out Tooth

Pick up by the crown (not root). Rinse gently. Place back in socket or keep in milk. Call us immediately — time is critical.

Chipped or Broken Tooth

Rinse mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress for swelling. Save any broken pieces. Call us right away.

Severe Toothache

Rinse with warm salt water. Floss gently to remove any trapped food. Do NOT put aspirin on the tooth. Call us for same-day care.

Object Stuck Between Teeth

Try gentle flossing — never use sharp objects. If it won't budge, call us. Don't wait — it can cause infection.

Dental Abscess

A swollen jaw, facial swelling, or fever with tooth pain is a dental emergency. Call us immediately.

Soft Tissue Injury

Bite on gauze or a clean cloth to control bleeding. If bleeding doesn't stop in 15 minutes, head to urgent care and call us.

Why Call Boardwalk for an Emergency?

General dentists may not have the specialized training to treat pediatric dental emergencies — or the availability. Dr. Doll is a board-certified pediatric specialist with 24-hour emergency access. Your child will be treated by someone who knows exactly how to handle kids' teeth, not a general practitioner on call.

We also prioritize getting you in same-day whenever possible. Pain and trauma don't wait for business hours, and neither do we.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a dental emergency for a child?

A dental emergency includes: knocked-out tooth, cracked or broken tooth, severe toothache, dental abscess or swelling, a tooth pushed out of position, or any injury to the mouth, jaw, or face. When in doubt, call us — we would rather help you decide over the phone than have you wait.

What should I do if my child knocks out a tooth?

For a permanent tooth: handle it by the crown (not the root), rinse gently without scrubbing, and try to place it back in the socket or store it in milk. Call us immediately — time is critical and reimplantation is most successful within 30–60 minutes. For a baby tooth, do not try to reinsert it. Call us for guidance.

Does Boardwalk Pediatric Dental offer after-hours emergency care?

Yes — we provide 24-hour emergency guidance. Call (801) 882-8800 and follow the prompts for after-hours emergency assistance. Dr. Doll is committed to making sure no family is left without guidance in a dental crisis.

Will insurance cover a dental emergency visit?

Most dental insurance plans cover emergency exams and some emergency treatments. Coverage for specific procedures (X-rays, extractions, crowns) varies by plan. Call our office and we will verify your benefits before or during your visit.
