Frequently Asked Questions

Everything parents want to know about Boardwalk Pediatric Dental and pediatric dentistry.

Getting Started

Do you accept new patients?

Yes — always. We welcome infants through teenagers, with no referral required. Book online or call (801) 882-8800.

When should my child first see a dentist?

By their first birthday, or within 6 months of the first tooth — whichever comes first. Early visits establish healthy habits and let Dr. Doll catch any concerns before they become problems.

What should I bring to the first visit?

Your dental insurance card, a list of any medications your child takes, and any previous dental X-rays if you have them. That's it — we handle the rest.

How long does the first visit take?

Plan for about 45–60 minutes. We take our time on first visits — office tour, meeting the team, exam, and a full parent debrief.

About Dr. Doll & the Practice

What makes Dr. Doll different from a general dentist?

Dr. Doll completed a 2-year residency after dental school exclusively focused on children's dental care — covering child psychology, behavior management, sedation, special needs, and craniofacial development. He is also board-certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, a distinction only a minority of pediatric dentists earn.

Does it cost more to see a pediatric dentist?

No. At Boardwalk, specialist-level care is billed at general dentist rates. You get a board-certified pediatric specialist at the same price you'd pay anywhere else.

What insurance do you accept?

All major dental insurance plans. Call (801) 882-8800 and we'll verify your benefits before your visit.

What if I don't have insurance?

Flexible payment plans and financing options are available. Call our team to discuss options.

Sedation & Anxiety

My child is terrified of the dentist. Can you help?

Absolutely — this is exactly why Dr. Doll built Boardwalk the way he did. The office has a skate ramp slide, arcade games, and soft serve ice cream. Dr. Doll uses a tell-show-do approach and never rushes a child. For kids who need more support, we offer all levels of sedation.

What sedation options do you offer?

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral conscious sedation, IV sedation, and coordination of general anesthesia at an accredited surgical facility. Dr. Doll will recommend the right level for your child's needs.

Is sedation safe for children?

Yes — when administered by a specialist following AAPD guidelines. Dr. Doll monitors heart rate, oxygen levels, and breathing continuously throughout every sedation procedure.

Tongue Tie & Lip Tie

How do I know if my baby has a tongue tie?

Signs include difficulty latching during breastfeeding, clicking sounds while nursing, poor weight gain, and a heart-shaped or notched tongue tip. Dr. Doll evaluates tongue and lip function at every visit.

Does tongue tie release hurt?

The procedure is quick — typically under 2 minutes. Topical or local anesthetic is used. Most infants nurse within minutes of the procedure.

What age can you treat tongue tie?

Newborn through teenager. Earlier treatment means faster recovery and greater benefit — especially for breastfeeding infants.

Emergencies

What do I do if my child knocks out a tooth?

For a permanent tooth: handle by the crown only, rinse gently, try to reinsert in the socket or store in milk, and call (801) 882-8800 immediately. Best outcomes happen within 30–60 minutes. For a baby tooth, do not try to reinsert — call us for guidance.

Do you offer after-hours emergency care?

Yes. Call (801) 882-8800 for 24-hour emergency guidance.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Knocked-out tooth, cracked or broken tooth, severe toothache, dental abscess or swelling, tooth pushed out of position, or any injury to the mouth or jaw. When in doubt, call us.

Special Needs

Does Dr. Doll treat children with special needs?

Yes. Dr. Doll has specialized training in treating children with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, ADHD, and other conditions. We offer weighted blankets, noise-canceling headphones, sensory lighting, extended appointments, and all levels of sedation.

Do I need a referral to bring my special needs child?

No referral needed. Call (801) 882-8800 to schedule a consultation so we can plan the best approach for your child.
